At 5 p.m. a native came in with a white .flag, and told U3 that the 'rebels Wpre coming in to surrender. This was discov.ered tb be a mere sham, and intended -to entrap us. At 6.30 p.m. Major McDonnell started to capture the rebel p?, at Ketemarai. After a hard, night's march he; arrived at and captured the pa. There were seven killed, and some prisoners taken. October 18. Seven men, eight women, and ten children were brought in prisoners. The orderly is mounted and ready to stasfc. We go to make another attack to-night. . I will send you full particulars. We expect sharp work of it. McDonnell is dangerously wounded, a bullet having shattered ._^he socket of the thigh. We have since heard of Captain McDonnell's death.
