The demise of the late Mr. Dowues will cause a vacancy in the offices of Sheriff of Marlborough, and Registrar of Births, Marriages, and Deaths for the district of Picton, both of which are in the gift of his Excellency the Governor. The E. Mail says a remarkably cool robbery has taken place in Christchurch. We understand that Mr. de Leon, manager for Messrs. Morton and Braithwnite, in this city, gave an order to a man to fetch a horse and trap which he had at Kohler's Gardens. The man presented the order, obtained the horse and vehicle, since which man, horse, and trap have disappeared. The new church at Oxford, Canterbury, was consecrated on Sunday last, by the Lord Bishop of the diocese. The building was attended by a very numerous congregation. An attempt is being made in Taranaki, to get up a company of Rifle Volunteers. , By the last mail j; we hear that the barque British Merchant,. Captain Scott, which left Blenheim • (Port Underwood), on February 24th, with, a cargo "of wool/ arrived safely at Gravcsend on the '29th June, after a rather long passage of 124 days.
