The mail for the Buller, Grey, ami Ilokitika, per Wallaby, closes at 10 a.m. to-mcrrow. An Otago paper states that Mr. Barton has been engaged as Defendant's Counsel in the forthcoming case to be tried at Nelson — "Owners of the (shipwrecked) Samson v. Owners of the Bruce." Mr. Horace Bastings has been elected Mayor of the town of Lawrence, without opposition. William White, one of the trackers of the Maungatapu Search Party, announces his intention of exhibiting at the Scandinavian Hotel, Dunedin, a series of sketches of the scenes of the murders at that place. The Times says — The Bluff and Invercargill railway is now so near completion that two or three days fine weather would suffice to enable the " iron horse" to run from station "without hindrance. It is to be hoped that the difficulty respecting the settlement with the contractors at the Bluff end will be amicably arranged, and that no impediment will be thrown in the way of the opening of the line.
