We learn that an attempt is being made to establish a whaling company iu Melbourne. A prospectus has been issued, and a preliminary meciing held. Several influential gentlemen have promised their assistance in the matter. "A return just issued shows that during the last year 2507 offenders were committed for trial in Scotland. Of these, three were sentenced to death, 179 to penal servitude, 1884 to varions terms of imprisonment, 19 to be detained in reformatory scools, aud 216 to be whipped fined, or discharged ou security.
