A few Aveeks ago, says the Times of 'the 9th, the Cumberland party, who are vrorking a back claim on the Kanieri River, sent 120 ozs of gold dust to the. London Chartered Bank in Melbourne, for the purpose of having it melted and assayed, and the real value of the metal thus ascertained. By the Rangitoto they received the hank return, which lias heen submitted to us for publication. Alter the gold Avas melted, it weighed llSozs 17dwts 12grs, thus showing a loss of loz 2dwts 12grs only — a very small one on so large a parcel ; Avhen assayed, it Avas found to be t'.'S-f carats fine. A reduction to the standard increased Hie ay eight to 1240zs 15dAvts 16grs, Avhich, at 755. 6d. per oz, realised £471 ls. Id., thus showing that the gold in its unrefined state is Avorth ahout £3 18s. 4d. per oz, no allowance being made for the cost of melting, etc.
