NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

Thursday, March 29th. Present: Messrs. Rout, Bentley, Watts, J). Burns, Wright, Carter, and R. Burn. Mr. Bentley in the chair. Mr. Watts brought up a report of sub-committee respecting repairs required in Grove-street and neighborhood. Resolved that the same committee, with the secretary, prepare a specification. Tenders were received and read for work in upper part of Brook-street, as follows: —Stephen Newport, £12 15s. per chain; Jas. Jennings, £244 10s, lump sum; George Herman, £11 15s. per chain ,- F. J.

Mills, £19 155. ; R. Gordon, £12 10s.; Jas. Newport, £L1 9s. Resolved, that the tender of Jas. Newport be accepted. /~The plans and specifiation for a bridge over the ."Brook-street stream and approaches thereto, by Mr. W. Akersten, were considered, It was agreed that •the matter stand over till next meeting. An application from Mr. J. Symons to remove earth in Waimea-street, was considered. Resolved, that permission be granted, on condition of gravel being provided by him, in proportion ; and that the same be done under the inspection of the secretary. F. G. Mills' application for advance on his contract was read. Resolved, that he be informed that the value of the work done, does not yet cover the amount of orders given by him. Resolved, that Mr. Stanton's request for the removal of earth, to be replaced by him with gravel, be acceded to, under the inspection of the secretary. The secretary reported repairs necessary at Gardener's Ford. Resolved, that the same be done by the staff. Mr. Carter pointed out repairs required in Manukastreet. Resolved, that the same be attended to. On the motion of Mr. Watts, it was resolved that Messrs. Bentley, D. Burns, and the mover, be appointed a committee to visit and report on the state of the road at the upper part of Toi-Toi Valley. Mr. Bentley called attention to a portion of road in Washington Valley, near Capt. Johnson's. Resolved, that the necessary repairs be effected. Mr. Watts reported a drain across footpath near Field's brewery. The secretary was requested to inquire into the matter, as also, a verandah in front of Mr. Tuet's shop, said to be below the height allowed by the regulations of the board. Mr. R. Burn directed attention to the nuisance caused by the collection of cabs, and other vehicles, plying on the port road, congregating at the junction of Bridge and Trafalgar-streets, thereby causing obstruction and inconvenience to the general traffic of the city in that locality. It was resolved that a ByLaw be drafted by nexo meeting, with a view to the better regulating of public carriages, plying within the city. Mr. Coe's application for advance in respect of plans, was considered. Resolved that he be informed that on completion of the written plans ordered, he would be paid the sum of £10 10s., and that the filling in of the same was not yet ordered. Mr. Lightband's letter respecting the junction of the Brook-street stream with the Maitai w as referred to the Brook-street committee and the Secretary, to report to the next meeting. Mr. Wilkin's application for the erection of a verandah was granted, subject to the inspection of the Secretary. A letter from Mr. Haddow was referred to the Secretary. A letter from Mr. Clements, complaining of a board j at the end of Mr. Lucas's shop projecting improperly was read. Resolved, That Messrs. Rout and D. Burns attend to the same, and report at the next meeting. The Bank pass book was produced, showing a balance this day, debit £459 4s. lOd. Accounts were ordered to be paid amounting to £45 Bs. lid. - The Secretary reported having sued several parties for eighth year's rates and arrears as directed. Appl:cations for Licenses. — We beg to remind our readers that to-morrow, Tuesday, is the last day for receiving applications for publicans' and billiard licenses, and that the day of hearing the applications is fixed for the 17th April, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon, at the Court House, Nelson.
