PKOPOSED AMENDMENTS
The Shops and Offices Bill, as report?;! from the Labour Bills Committee of the Legislative Council, contains a numtcr of suggested amendments.
! Xhe clause enabling the occupier of a shop in which perishable goods are sold by auction to keep his shop open and employ his assistants on the statutory closing day has been slightly chenged. The occupier is required to obtain a permit from the inspector, and the inspector is to grant a permit only if he is satisfied that it is mcessnrv to do so in order to prevent the perishable goods from deteriorating.
| Under the Bill, as passed by t'lie House, a hawker is deemed to keep a shop open "whenever and wherever he is selling or offering goods for sab i v retail." The committee has added ''or delivering such goods." The clause providing that an assistant shall not be employed in an hotel or restaurant for moTe than nine hour'j (excluding meal times) in any one cHy, lips been altered by the substitution of "ion" for "nine,"
The committee has restored the clause J relating to shops at an exhibition or show. The inspector of factories may rive permission to the occupier of a si-op to carry on liis business and employ one or more assistants at an exhibition or show, if satisfied that tho business will be subsidiary to the main purposes of the exhibition or show, and that the exhibition or show is temporary. The provisions of the AijJ or of any award or industrial agreement in force are to apply to the hours and overtime payment of assistants employed i in such circumstances.
