PUKENUI TIMBER

(To the Editor)

frir, Allow me to enter a vigorous protest against the suggestion to sell the Pukenui timber outside the district without first offering it in the district at prices equivalent to what could be got in Auckland. In the first place it would cost at the very lowest 3s per 100 ft boat freight 6d, cartage to wharf, plus wharfage, etc. I venture to say that by the time it would land in xVuckland it would cost 5s per 100 super feet. I would like to suggest that the Council reduce the price of timber 3s per 100 feet and thereby give the ratepayers and people in the district a chance to buy cheap timber. It appears to me that the Counc : l ; s making no genuine effort to sell this timber, but instead there seems to be a certain element in the Council who would like to get rid of the timber lock, stock and barrel, and thereby stifle competition. Suppose the Council did sell the timber iii Auckland, it would only be first class kauri, ,as "o.b. rimu is as dead as Caesar's ghost. I have returned from a trip to the South Island, and when coming no!«C I thousands of feet of rimu stacked up al! along the main trunk line. So you see what chance the Council would have in selling o.b. rimu in Auckland. Thanking you—l am, etc., RATEPAYER "WITH NO AXE TO ("RIND. I
