Local fruiterers are not incline! to believe New Zealand grown lemons will take the place of American lemons on the Christchurch market, for the reason that the Auckland article will not keep long enough, says an exchange. "If the Government finds a way of sun drying the lemons as is done in America, there would be big possibilities for the industry," said a retailer, "but until they can do that Christchurch will have to draw its supplies from the States."

In connection with a visit to be paid to Warkworth to-morrow by a Government veterinarian, who is to give a demonstration bearing on the subject of cattle-dipping, the "Rodney Times" says it was suggested at a recent meet ing that as cattle were now so cheap i b3ast might be killed for the purpose of anatomical explanations. No one seems to have been mentioned, however, as likely to donate the beast in question, notwithstanding the low prices prevailing for stock.

At the 'Whangarei Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., charges were preferred against three residents of Hikurangi and one of Whangarei of having their premises yt-such a condition as to afford, or be likely to afford, a harbourage for rats and other vermin. These were the first cases of their kind taken by the local Health Department authorities, and under the circumstances the Magistrate inflicted small fines of 10s and costs in two cases, and a conviction with costs of 7s in the other case. Mr Levien reserved his decision in the Whangarei case, pending inspection of the premises. He indicated, however, that the penalties would be more severe in future should the public ignore the demands of the authorities to keep their premises in proper order.

Iveen enthusiasm was the keynote of the twenty odd sportsmen present at last night's special meeting of the Northland Trotting Club, held in Mr B. Harris' rooms, to decide whether the Club should carry on and run another meeting in face of the disappointment of not having secured a totalisator permit. The president, Mr A. E. McMahon, explained that it meant an almost inevitable financial loss which could not be faced other than by guarantees by members to make up the prospective deficit Members were of unanimous opinion that the sport should be kept going, and the very gratifying amount of £105 was guaranteed by those present towards defraying the anticipated loss. The committee was authorised to go ahead with promotion of another meeting and to arrange a date.
