After an absence during , the weekend, .Clarence Courtney returned to his house at Bar.ua Bay on the 19th ult., and found that someone had paid a visit to it during his absence, and (had taken French leave of someshirts and socks, a shaving outfit, and a gold tie-pin. Courtney considered it a case In which he could well look to the .poilce for help in finding a, solution, with the result that Constable Power visited Paraa Bay and set about gathering clues aimed at solving the mystery.
'The constable's : nvestigations led him to suspect a tjrey-haired man named Christopher Gearing, who had been in the district and had subsequently sought new surroundings. Results from further inquiry put the constable on to his trail, and on Tuesday Gearing was bailed up 'at Wiaikiekie and invited to accept State hospitality for the night in Whangarei. Yesterday afternoon he put in an appearance at the Court and heard Senor-Sergeant Hollis tell the Bench that he had been wearing some of the clothing missed from Parua Bay iwhen arrested Iby Constaible Power. He will however, have a few days in which to think over the position, as the police obtained a remand to enable them to connect together the various dues which had led them to suspect Gearing of being the right man to answer the charge of 'breaking and entering and burglary.
