Oyama Turns Defeat Into
Victory.
Press Association—Copyright. London, Yesterday. Unexpectedly the pressure on the Japanese right was relaxed.
General Gripenberg was trying to capture the villages to the south of Heikoutai and to surround the Japanese with a view to threatening Yentai and Liaoyang. Marshall Oyama, on the 28fch, finding the Japanese still unable to recapture Heikoutai, encouraged the columns to make a night attack, though expecting annihilation owing to the numerous machine guns used by the enemy. The columns attacked with all their might, the Eussians evacuating Heikoutai at dawn.
General Oku's left ana extreme left wing is now on the right bank of the Hunho.
The Kussians admit thirteen thousand casualties.
It is estimated that one hundred thousand combatants were engaged in the battle at Heikoutai.
The Japanese have re-named Dalnv. Tairen. °
General Kuropatkin reports that a patrol exploded the railway five miles south of Liaoyang. General Stoessel has arrived at Colombo. He denies that the newspaper correspondents adduced facts in support of the allegation that Port Arthur's surrendering was unjustified, and that Dr. Morrison's (the London Times' correspondent) statement was absolutely correct.
