Tenders For Chairs.

The Mayor (Mr E. O. Hurley). Crs *V. Browning, A. Jack, E. J. Armstrong, H. Haydon, A. France, E. W. Goodger, K. Essex, H. Tolley, and B. Holben were present at a special meeting of the ■Borough Council last night to consider various matters in connection with the Opera House.

TENDEBS FOE CHAIRS. A large number of tenders were received for the Opera House chairs, which under the specifications were divided into four lots: For the dress circle, orchestral stalls, ordinary stalls, and Municipal Hall (Austrian chairs). On going into the tenders, the Council discovered thai no tiino had been specified when the chairs were to be delivered.

The architect, Mr F. J. Wilson, was present,£and explained that the time could be fixed wlkh the contract was Blgned. After a lengihy discussion, during which motions u,ud amendments were proposed, it was decided, on the motion of Cr Essex, seconded by Or Holben, jto accept the tender of Harry Palmer for 650 Austrian chairs with embossed seats for the municipal hall at 5s 6d each, and to invite fresh tenders for the whole of the Opera House chairs proper, and that tenderers be informed the chairs must be delivered as per specifications not later than April 15th next. CLERK OF WORKS. Five applications were received for the position of clerk of works to the Opera House. The conditions set forth that the clerk was to be employed whilst the works were in progress, at a salary of £4 101 per week. The application accepted was that of Mr H. CC&llinson, builder and contractor, of BangitikeiBlreet, Palmerston North. The other applicants for the position were James Amott, Philip N. Hunt, Charles Gordon, and J. G. Au^tee. • special rates. A formal resolution, making special' rates of £d and l-16th d in the £ on the rateable value for the Opera House loans, totalling £9500, was passed.
