ANNIVERSARY DAY.
Mr W. J. Culver, Inspector of Awards, furnishes us with the following information in regard to Anniversary Day:— In respect to Shops and Offices Act, under section 19 the afternoon of any day observed as a public holiday as .specified therein, may be observed by sKop-keepers as the 'weekly half-holi-day i'rT'lieU of the regular day during the same week. The days mentioned in section 19 aiN3 not compulsory. If, therefore, the Mayor invites the observance of a holiday: on Monday next, shop-keepers may cl&e for the halfholiday on that day imtf ad of on the usual day in the eame wOfk. Under the Factories Act*;., Section 35 provides that Saturday shall be given to all boys under '\lB and to all women, but the half holP day is not compulsory for males over 18 except those affected by' certain Awards. This half-holiday must be given to women and boys apart altogether from whether there are any other holidays in the same week, excepting where the day is changed to that observed for shops by a poll of the electors under section 36, in which case the factory may, like a shop, observe either the regular half-holiday or the afternoon of the public holiday in the same week.
"Under Awards: Bakers, furniture trades employeee, letterpress printers' machinists, saddlers, and workers in timber yards and sawmills, must observe Saturday, and cannot change the day to Monday. With regard to butchers the day can be changed to the Monday if the employers can agree with the "Union to -subsitute the Monday for the Saturday, or if the holiday is to be generally observed on the Monday, but not otherwise. The same applies to drivers, bookbinders and paper-rulers. •
