Juvenile CoHciVr.— The programme pf the concert t° be given m Bwart'i Hall to-morrow evening will befound m another column, rlt is m every way an excellent bill Hatilock. — At a vestry meeting held on the 12th instant, the Rev. Mr Opie kindly offered to give his services gratuitously fora a time to assist the Church m its difficulties. The following resolution was carried :— '• That tbe Rev. Mr Opitt's kind offer to hold services gratuitously be accepted for the present ; that the game be announced to the congregation; and that the vestry now pledges itself to snstain the services of the Church, and influence their friends to do likewise." It was stated at the meeting that the liabilities at the end of this year would be £32. A parochial meeting is called for January 12, 1882, at the Tcwn j Hall, Havelock. A full attendance is urgently requested. j HavcliOCK Bbhnv of Works. — The Havelock Board of Works met on December 12. Present— Messrs Smith (chairman), Perry, Morrison, Yarker, and Scott. The minutes of lost meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved that the clerk be instructed to make tbe town assessment for the year 1882-83. The following accounts were passed for payment:—T. Brown, L 6 9s; Francis Craig, L 7 15s ; R. Nesbitt, Lll 6s ; J. Davis, LI 9s 9d ; M. Boreieon. 10s 6d ; R. Jones, L 6 3b; O. Hayden, 19s 6d ; Eliza Davidson. L 2. As Admibbr or Te Whiti.— By the Brigantine Omaha, which arrived resently from the Chatham Islands, there came a M*nri chief, a particular friend and admirer of Te Wbiti, laden with presents for the Parihaka. prophet. Amongst the savory things this rangatira had with him were twenty- three casks of preserved albatrosses, a delicacy much prized by .tbe natives. The coat of capturing, preparing, and packing that quantity of birds was said to have been £200, a turn which the chief generously paid over, hoping to have tbe pleasure of surprising his' prophetic friendjat Parihaka with substantial evidence of bis allegiance and reverence. Upon tbe vessel's arrival at port, our reporter informed the passengers of the arrest of the aroh agitator, and his dne lodgment m prison with Toha and the oth»rs. The chief, however, utterly repudiated any belief m tbe story, remarking that even were such the fact and that Te Whiti was killed, he would return to life quite easily.. Upon a news-' paper being shown him with the particulars hesded "Trial of Te Whiti," he laughingly observed that it was merely put m the paper to ensure a readier sale for them. — " Press." A Railway Abht.— The force of men now at work on the Denver and Rio Grande railway extension is larger than tbe United States army numbering mow than 32,000, of whom nearly 19,000 are at work m old' Mexico, 3 to 4000 m New Mexico, 5 or 6000 iv Colorado, and the remainder m tUtah and elswbere. As these workers (support many others, it is within boandg to say that th'i single railway corporation furnishes support to over 100,000 people m its work 'of extension alone. Tbe same company has ordered 100 loeomd'tives for Mexico, which suggests the contiibntion snoh an enterprise and commercial industries connected with railway building. It is against such benificieat efforts of capital and energy that the antimonopolists raise the cry of destruction. — Chicago "Railway Age." Japanese Esterpri.se. — The Japanese telegraph syntem, established ten years agn, has doW 3929 miles of line, and 9,345 miles of wire. Twenty words are sent sixty miles for less than a penny, Last year the number \of messages transmitted was 1,272,756. There are 348 Morse instruments m use, 26 single needle-blocks and 29 Bell telepboues.
