THE COLONIAL PRIZE FIRING.

Sir, — I see by a paragraph m your paper that the {'representatives at the late Colonial Prize Firing at Hokifcika passed a resolution to the effect that the present system of holding the Colonial meetings at a fresh place every year was very expensive to the Colony,-and recommended that a central place should be chosen, at which the Colonial Rifle contests could be permanently held. They also pointed out that a great saving could be effected by that course. The Government would then be abla to giv« larger prizes, and offer greater inducement to competitors m general, as the money expended m raising butts and fixing targets at a new range every year, could be devoted to making the prizes greater. This being the case, I think that now is the time for the Volunteers, m this district to take up the matter. According to the Nelson Mail the choice seems to lay between Wellington and Nelson, but I think that we can offer a range here which is second to none m New Zealand, and which possesses also the advantage of being central to a degree. The Prize Firing never has been held here, and as' it was half: promised that it should be so next year, I think that the. Government cannot do better than hold the next meeting m Marlborough, and make the arrangements Decessary for it being so permanently. I have drawn attention to this, hoping that my hrother Volunteers will see the necessity tor taking some action m the matter before itie settled beyond recall.— l am, &c,
