LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

—♦ ■ - MONDAT, NOV. U. Present :-Councillors England, AUwright, Willcox, Hawkins, Woledge, Ward, and Chalmers; the Mayor presiding. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. : The correspondence was read. 1 :i The works committee's report was read as follows;—The,Governor's Bay Road, from Lyttelton to Rapaki, is completed, as far as the amount granted by the Provincial Government will allow. The following is the work that has been done. The earth slips have been removed,; the gutters have been cleaned out and deepened the whole distance, up in the centre, on an average of one foot the whole distance, excepting where itisrock cutting. The hollowia Corsair Bay has been filled up 3 feet; flveadditional culverts have been placed at the portions of the road that absolutely required them; a cesspit has been constructed leading into the culvert made by the Provincial Government near Mr Holmes' property, five chains of metalling have been done; six men have been employed on the work tliirty-flve days two hours, and two men thirteen days one hour. The total cost lias been—labour, £79 19s 9d; timber, 700 ft. £3 12s lid ; carting, £8 6s 3d; powder and tools, £5 9s; total, £97 75 .. lid. The committee regret that the amount of the grant was insufficient to metal the road the whole distance, and thus ensure a permanent work, and also that the financial position of the Council does not warrant the committee in requesting a grant from it, but they consider it their duty to state that an additional sum of £65 would make the road in such a condition that,very little outlay would be required for years. The committee also beg to state that the foreman, Mr Hodgson, has succeeded in getting a larger quantity of work done for the amount of the grant than they calculated upon, The balance of the grant will be expended in various minor works during the following week. On the motion of Councillor Ward, seconded by Councillor Chalmers, it was resolved that the report should be received. The following accounts were passed:— Weekly pay sheet, £ls h; W Austin, £1 16s,

Tenders for lighting the town were opened: —Croton, 4d per lamp each night; W. Graham, £2 per lamp per anuuiu, or £76; T.Rodgers, fl3I 18s per annum; Street 4d per lamp;'D.Barrett, 12s6dforalllampseach night; Bruce, £IOO per annum, or £2 12s 8d eaohiliunp; J. Miller, £2 7s 6d each lamp per year; Higginbotliam, 4d per lamp per night, or £3 per year. ' s '

On the motion of Councillor Ward, seconded by Councillor England, it was resolved that W. Graham's tender be accepted Councillor Clialmers moved tlio resolution standing iu his name, on which the Council went into committee to consider their tenure of the reserves.
