MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, June 22. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.)
Diti'xicENNESs. Alexander Beattie was charged with having been drunk and disorderly and using obscene language on Saturday night, Constable Jeffrey said at about a quarter to eleven, accused was creating a disturbance in the vicinity of the theatre. He was drunk, and offering to fight people, and wingmost obscene language. Accused did not deny the offence, and was fined 10s, His Worship remarking that he was dealt thus leniently with in consequence of no previous offence of the kind appearing against him in the charge sheet.
LYTTELTOtf. (Before W. Donald, Esq., 8.M.) Dbuxk and Using Obscene Language. —Willirtin Fitzsimmonds was charged with this offence. Constable Quinn proved that the accused was drunk yesterday afternoon, and, whil<t walking in Norwich Quay, used obscene language. George Brown, licensed waterman, corroborated the statement. Accused said it was his first offence. The Bench said the habit of using obscene language was becoming an intolerable nuisance to the community, and it must be severely dealt with. As the accused had not been before him on a previous occasion, he would be fined 10s. The fine was paid.
