THE following Extract from the New Zealand Gazette, No. 43, of the 20th | July, 1866, is published for general information : " Colonial Defence Office, "Wellington, July 11,1866. " His Excellency the Governor has been pleased to appoint Major Henry Elmhurst Reader to command the Militia and Volunteers in the province of Canterbury, during the absence of Lieut.-Colonel White. Major Reader assumes command of the Militia and Volunteers in the province from this day's date. BROOKE'S ASSIGNMENT. -fTOTICE IS HBREBI" GIVEN that by xl deed bearing date the 16th day of July, 1866, and made between John Charles Brooke, of the city of Christchurch, in the province of Canterbury, in the colony of New Zealand, chemist, of the first part, John Lewis, of Christchurch, aforesaid, Commission Agent, and Richard Walton, of Christchurch, aforesaid, merchant, of the second part, and all other persons and bodies corporate, creditors of the said John Charles Brooke, of the third part, the said John Charles Brooke conveyed and assigned all his real and personal estate and effects unto the said John Lewis and Richard Walton, their heirs, executors, administrators, and ' assigns, upon trust for the equal benefit of all the creditors of the said John Charles Brooke, and the said deed' now lies at our offices for inspection and execution, by the creditors of the said John Charles Brooke.
