{From the Argus Correspondent.) Sydney, Jan. 80. A private letter from Outerthorpe Station, 250 miles north west of Fort Bourke, says that one of Leichardt's expedition died there of exhaustion. Mr. Halloran, of the Lands Department, has been appointed UnderSecretary in the Colonial Secretary's department. Mr. Vallack, chief clerk, retires on full pay. The Governor purposes visiting the southern districts this week. He will likely make a lengthened stay. The markets are unaltered. The half-yearly report of the Australasian Steam Navigation Company shows a loss on the half-year of £4654 Os. sd. The deficiency is attributable to the late opposition of the Queensland S.N. Company on the northern portions of the line. It is proposed to cover the loss from the insurance i fund. Jan. 31. The Joint Stock Banking Company have declared a dividend of fifteen per cent, per annum. Mr. Dean sold the Hadley's cargo of Mauritius sugars at the following rotes: —White counters, £42 15s. to J843 7s. 5d.; counters, £36 to £39 2s. 6d.; rations, £31 to £32 10s. The mercantile community intend contesting before the Supreme Court the right of the Collector of Customs to charge ad valorem duty on other tliyi the invoiced value of invoices. One of the Warders at Darlinghurst has been accidentally shot by another warder. " Under the Holly," a new cantata by Messrs. Whitworth and Fisher, was produced last night with success. The annual report of the Infirmary shows the year's receipts to be £9496, and the expenditure £8842. Fat cattle are very Bcarce. Good beasts are worth £11. There is nothing "doing in breadstuffs. The Kadosh's cargo of Californian wheat is selling in small lots at Bs, at three months. Brisbane, Jan. 30. The Toowoomba Agricultural Show proved a great success. Several samples of wheat weighed 641b to the bushel. A new commission of the peace has been issued. It contains 464 names. Pleuro-pneumonia is spreading. A heavy storm passed over the city on Saturday. Hailstones fell as large as walnuts. Additional items extracted from Messrs. Greville and Bird's (Seuter's agents) telegrams: — Adelaide, Jan. 30. The lieutenant of the Shenandoah haw arrived by the Penola. He is travelling for information prior to returning home to Europe. The Public Works department has received five more designs from Melbourne and Sydney, for the proposed new building for the post and telegraph offices. They had been detained at the Port through some omission. Mauritius papers to hand, in comparing their new mail service with the performances of the P. and 0. Company, show that the new company performs the service in some cases in less time than the P. and 0. Company did during the previous year. There is some probability of Dr. Backhouse, who is shortly expected out from England, being appointed Roman Catholic Bishop of Adelaide. In the Assembly to-night, the Government succeeded in negativing the motion to refer the question of pastoral leases to a select committee.
