♦ Lyttellon Times Office, Friday Evening. Accounts vary as to the manner in which the fourth of the month passed over, but on the whole the balance inclines to the favourable view of the question. As a rule bills were fairly met, though in some cases not perhaps without effort. Business has been better during the week, orders having been freely given for goods required on account of the works being carried on along the West Coast road. The accounts received from travellers speak much more favourably of ibe progress of the contractors on that work. The weather has been more even during the past fortnight, and the workmen have made greater progress than for some time past; drays have passed over the saddle, and light vehicles can travel as far as the Teremakau. This, coupled with the encouraging news received from the goldfields, can hardly fail before long to stimulate business in Christchurch.

GRAIN REPORT. Since our last report no change has occurred in this market—a quiet steady trade continues to be done in flour at £22, but little grain has come forward during the week, transactions only moderate—for prime samples of wheat, 7s per bushel may still be quoted as top price. The business done in oats has been confined to the retail trade, no speculative purchases have been reported this week, and the market is decidedly quieterSB to 5s to 6d are current rates. Otaoo.—By the Wellington we have advices to the sth inst. The Otago Daily Tima reports: — Pending arrivals from Melbourne, tho advices from which place are anxiously awaited, there is but a limited amount of business doing amongst importers. The last intelligence from Hokitika and the West Coast is favourable, and shippers are again in possession of orders to a fair extent. Freight has, however, become scarce, and, therefore, but few goods are, at the moment, being dispatched. No movement in the flour market has tak£n place, nor have we heard of any change in value of staple commodities. The auction sales have been ml.
