Goverppxent Notices. STEAM SERVICE. TENDERS are required by the Provincial Government of Canterbury for the performance of the undermentioned SERVICE A STEAMER for the HOKITIKA RIVER, to act as a TUG, and for landing mailt, passenger*, and cargo, and to be subject to the following conditions The Steamer to be of not lew than 30 honepower. To be fitted with towing hooks, hawses, and other necessary appliances to qualify her for a steam tug. To be duly approved of and passed by the Marine Board as a sea-going steamer, allowed to carry passengers. The Captain and Owners to bind themselves to maintain at Hokitika a reserve depot of coals, of not less than one month's consumption. „ , The Captain and Owners, on application by the Government authorities, to render such assistance with the steam tug, in case of need, as may be compatible with the safety of the vessel herself. The Captain and Owners not to engage to tow any vessel up to the township while others requiring assistance remain outside, but after placing one vessel in safety inside the lagoon, immediately to recross the bar (tide and weather permitting) for another. The Captain and Owners to land and take over the bar all Government officers, on service, and her Majesty's mails, free of charge. The Service to commence not later than the Ist SEPTEMBER NEXT, and to continue for Six Months, with power reserved to the Government to extend the term to Twelve Mentha, on giving two months' notice to that effect. A penalty of £50 will be exacted for every breach of the contract, unless caused by circumstances beyond the control of the contractors. Tenders for the above service to state what subsidy will be required for the performance of the service for a period of six months'; also, to state the tariff of charges for the landing of passengers and goods, as well as the rates for towage.
