FINANCES OF NEW SOUTH WALES.

From the abstract of the sums required to meet the estimated expenditure of the Government of New South Wales for the year 1865, we find that the total amount chargeable on revenue is £1,434,060, against £1,429,873 appropriated for the year 1864— increase, £4187. In the Executive and Legislative department there is a small increase, the amount required for the year 1865 being £19,171 against £18,926 for 1864. The Chief Secretary's departments show a decrease of £14,523, the amount required for 1865 being £455,861, against £470,384 for 1864. There is a decrease in the estimate for police for £20,556, but an increase of £10,000 for volunteers and the naval brigade. For gold escort there is a decrease of £2300; but in the estimate for I gaols and penal establishments there is an increase of There is a small increase in the estimate for the Protestant and Roman Catholic Orphan schools, and a decrease of £8700 for charitable allowances. In the departments for the administration of justice the amount required for 1865 is £49,225, against £47,342 for 1864—increase, £2117. The increase is in the estimate for the Supreme and Circuit Courts of £2000, for allowance to witnesses. In the Sheriff's department there is a small decrease; and in the estimate for the district courts there is a decrease of £1200; and an increase in quarter sessions of £1400. The estimates for the departments under the Treasurer and Secretary for Finance and Trade show an increase of about £27,000, the amount required for 1865 being £293,537, against £266,564 for 1864. In this department we find there is an increase of £2,210 in the Customs, and an increase of £733 in the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint, an increase of £4,000 in the Post-office, and £7,000 in the Colonial Storekeeper's. In the estimate for printing, &c..

there is a decrease of £ 1,563, and a decrease of £16,000 in the estimate for harbours, light-houses, &c. For miscellaneous services there is an increaseof £14,227, £10,0 to of which are for interest on public accounts overdrawn at the banks where such are kept, and £4,500 for postage and transmission of telegraphic messages for the various departments. In the estimates for the departments under the Secretary for Lands there is a decrease of £53,000, the amount required for the year 1865 being £175,373, against £228,430 for 1864. In the estimates for the goldfields we find adecrease of £6,200; and a decrease of £42,000 in the estimate for roads other than main roads, this sum being transferred to

the Public Works department. There is, however, on the other hand, a sum of £40,000 for assisted

immigration from the United Kingdom, winch it is proposed to raise by loan. The estimates for the department of the Secretary for Public Works show an increase of £43,300, the increase being in the working expenses of railways, £8,000 ; public works and buildings, £4,000; roads and bridges, £44,000 (of this sum £40,000 is transferred from the Lands Department, under which head it was voted last year). Under the head of harbours and river navigation there is a decrease of £3,000. The estimate for the electric telegraph shows an increase of £1,300. The amount required to be raised by loan is £145,400, viz.For railw ays, £74,500 (this sura is required for additional railway sheds, stations, and to meet outstanding claim s for land onj the Penrith, Picton, and Singleton extensions); harboursand river navigation, £14,900; public works and buildings, £56,000 (of this sum £25,000 is required for a penitentiary, and £25,000 for a lunatic asylum). The amount required to be raised by loan for 1865 is altogether £185,400 against £670,026 for the year 1864.

Under the head of special appropriations, the amount required for the year 1865 is £891,458, against £341,500 for 1864. This increase of £50,600 is caused by the interest on the debentures, which were authorised, but only lately issued, and now amounts to £300,000, or £20,000 more than for the year 1864. This will make our debt in debentures actually issued amount to £6,000,000. There is also £16,458 for interest on Treasury bills, and £10,000 for revenue and receipts returned. The total amount required for the year 1865, including loans, is £2,010,918, against £2,441,399 voted for the year 1864. The Supplementary Estimates for the year 1864 amounted to £121,980, and the amount to be raised by loans, including railways (£20,300), is £39,050.
