The ship Yicksburg, commanded by Captain Boyd, well known in this port as commander of another of Messrs. Pairick, Henderson & Co.'s vessels (the Pladda) was signalled off the Heads in the morning, and in the afternoon was towed up. She brings a large general cargo and 46 passengers, who arrive all well, no deaths having occurred, while the original number shipped was increased by two births during the passage. The Vicksburg sailed from the Clyde on 9th March, but put back to Bamlach Bay, where she was detained until 15th March. Had a good run of 30 days to the equator; was baffled on the line for four or five days ; in 3 deg. S. got the S.E. trade winds, which were experienced indifferently to 18 deg. S. when they were lost altogether. In 20 deg. S and 27 deg. W. experienced a hurricane, which lasted only for a short time, but was very violent while it endured. From that point to the Cape had bad weather, and from the meridian of the Capt to Stewart's Island the weather was unusually severe, gale succeeding gale, with a heavy sea. Sighted Stewart's Island orf the Ist, on passing which there was an immediate improvement in the weather. Previous to arrival, a soiree was held on board the ship, when the passengers presented to Captain Boyd an address, expresswarm language, their admiratipn of his seamanship and his kindly behaviour to all on board.—Otago Daily Times, July 5.

Another Disastkb at Sea. Loss op Four Lives. —The whaling barque Emily Downing, Captain James Lucas, anchored off Sandy Bay on the 9th inst., having been compelled to return to port in consequence of being disabled whilst off the west coast of New Zealand, where slit- shipped a sea which swept the decks and washed four men overboard, allot' whom were drowned. From a perusal of the log, we gather that on the 17 th May, when in lat. 44 S., long. 166 E., heavy westerly gales were experienced with a high cross sen, which increased during the night. At 7 a.m. on the 18th the wind veered more to the southward, and whilst tlie hands were preparing to "wear ship" a heavy sea struck her, causing her to heel over, hatches under, and taking everything on deck overhoard, including mizcn-inast and boom, sails, rigging, jibbooru, five boats with all their gear, cooking utensils, &c,, as also Captain Lucas and live men. The captain and one man, a native, succeeded in again reaching the ship, bnt the four others, including Mr, Draper, the ship-keeper, were drowned. A rope was thrown to Mr. J)raper several times, but it is supposed that he must have been injured and prevented thereby from availing himself of the assistance offered. The names of the men that lost their lives were James Draper, shipkeeper, James Bates, cook, Thomas Edmunds and Robert Donald, seamen. By the same sea, John Monkey, Denis Mulcaney, and Martin McEvoy were seriously injured. As speedily as possible, Ihe wreck was cut clear of the ship, and the pumps manned. Fortunately excepting the water, which went into the hold by the iiatehes and where the stauneheons were carried away, the vessel made very little, there was suliieient, however, to employ all handi for 12 hours, when the pumps sucked, and she has continued free ever since. Edmonds and Donald were native* of Tasmania, and at the time of the accident were amidships. Draper was in the roundhouse, and must have been taken overboard with it, and Captain Lucas was near the wheel. The man at the wheel was knocked down and injured, but not seriously. On the li)th the Flying Childers and Runnymede were spoken, and from the former Captain Lucas obtained a compass, with which lie has been enabled to return to Kobart Town. The Flying Chihlers reported the Lady Emma with two whales. The Runnymede had taken 20 tuns sperm. On the passage home Captain Lucas reports having frequently seen whalei.
