EAST HEATHCOTE DISTRICT ROAD BOARD.

The Board held their meeting on Friday, the 29th April, at their offices, Ferry road. Present—The Chairman (Mr. Montgomery), Mr. Kennaway, and Mr. Fisher. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, The Chairman laid before the Board communications which had been received. From the Assistant Provincial Engineer, in reference to the repairs of the Bridle-path, stating there was no funds at his disposal for that work. From the Chairman of the Port Victoria Road Board, in answer to a letter dated Ist April. From Mr. Jarman, offering to supply a corporation seal to the Board.

From Mr. Luck, in reference to making roads near sections No. 96, 89, 157, and 49, and stating that he was empowered to supply ninety pounds of the cost if the Board would furnish the remainder for forming and metalling portions of roads near the above sections. And from several persons living near the bank of the Heatlicote River, asking the Board to make the roads near, so that they would be passable in winter. The following resolutions were then passed:— That tlie Surveyor be directed to communicate with the Provincial Secretary, and respectfully draw his attention to the fact that the contractors for the repairs of the Bridle Path were not carrying out the terms of their contract. That the Surveyor be directed to report upon the roada on the banks of the Heatlicote, and also the roads alluded to by Mr. Luck. That the Surveyor be directed to see Mr. J. Kerr, and request liirn to make a final proposition in reference to the road required through his land. That the Clerk be directed to procure a seal for the use of the Board according to a design decided upon. That the Clerk write to Mr. Wright, stating that the Board will contribute one-third the expense of making the road referred to by him in his letter to the Board ot the 14tli February, if he will pay the other two-thirds, and , that the Surveyor will lay out and supervise the work. The following tenders were then opened:— For the supply of timber for twelve months, Million and Co., 24s (id pur hundred feet superficial, accepted. For lowering and fencing 21 chains road near the Ferry, 1101 l and Heaton, £150, accepted. For forming 50 chains of Mills Road, .torster, £7-), Forming 58 chains Hills Road, lorster, .£79 los, Forming 47 chains of Hills lioad, Stirling, £04 12s Gd, accepted. , The Surveyor's report was then read. lie stated that he had laid out the roads as directed by the Board, and handed in the plans ot same. He reported upon the Sumner Road from Moabone lomt to McCormack's, and suggested the foniiiiUoii of this road by the line formerly laid out by Captain Thomas. He also asked for assistance to make up the Ratepayers' Roll. , It would be necessary for the toll-collector on tl e Heatlicote swing bridge to have shelter in the season, lie suggested that a toll house be erected, and asked permission to obtain lamps for lighting the bridge. . i The Surveyor also proposed altering the approach to Latter's bridge on the north side, as a good seam of gravel was now opened by the contractors on t ie opposite side of the bridge, he thought it would be a good opportunity of altering and metalling this piece of the road. He asked permission to advertise

for tenders for the repairs of the Ferry road, Stunner i'oad, and Bridle path. He suggested to the Board that the new swing bridge should be leased at once. . , . He asked to be allowed to procure instruments tor the works of the Board; to fix culverts on the Hills roads, wher^necessary on the Stanmore road, and on the Slaughter-house road. The Surveyor also reported upon the watercress in the lliver l-lenthcote, which is keeping back the water, thereby stopping the draitiage from the low grotntds, and gave in an estimate of the cost of clearing. 4] lie reported having received and paid into the bank £1000, which he had received from the Government; and also money received from the tolls of the Heathcote bridge. Resolutions giving effect to the above recommendations were then passed, and after some further routine business the board adjourned to Friday next.
