On Saturday evening last a dinner was given at the Boyal Hotel, by the resident gcntry of tlio place, to Mr. Bose, sub-collector of customs, who is about leaving tor Lyttelton as promotion on the service. , • • Thirteen gentlemen sat down to dinner, the chair being taken by the Besident Magistrate; the vice by 1. The Chairman, in proposing* Mr. Eose's health, rapidly glanced, in a neat and complimentary speeh, at that gentleman's never-failing kindness in assisting and forwarding any schemes productive of good to the community; the personal trouble and kindly help he had given in forwarding the Mechanics' Institute when that society was struggling into existence under innumerable difficulties, deserved the thanks of all classes. The Chairman, in conclusion, said he felt assured .that all present would respond to the toast in a manner indicative of the great esteem in which Mr. Bose was held. The toast was drunk with honors and three times three. Mr. Bose, in returning thanks, said he felt greatly the honor shown him that evening; that he had always, to the best of his ability, done what he could in promoting the establishment ox the Mechanics' Institute. Haying had spare time on his hands, ho felt it to be a positive duty. He trusted that the good will shown toliimself would bo extended to his successor in office, Mr. Carver. Mr. LeCron spoke warmly of the kind and able manner in which Mr. Boso had invariably acted in his official capacity towards himself; and ho felt assured that what he had said would be fully borne out by any one having had business relations with Mr. Bose. The Vice Chairman, in a short speech, proposed the health of Mr. Carver, who, in returning thanks, said he hoped ho would be able to merit, both in his official and privato capacity, the good esteem in which his predecessor was held. After a most pleasant and convivial evening, the company broke up.
