TOWN AND COUNTRY.
Nelson Waste Lands.—ln our issue of the 2nd instant we stated that the price of waste lands in the Nelson province had been raised from £1 to £2 per acre This was erroneous, the fact being that £2 per acre' was to be the fixed maximum upset price at which such waste lands should be offered for sale. Carpenters' Strike.—We are sorry to observe from an advertisement, that the carpenters have determined to cease work on the 14th instant, unless their demand of an increase of wages be complied with This is one of a train of evils likely to arise from the late ill-advised movement of the butchers increasing the price of meat. The Dramatic Company from Duneain, we are informed, are unable to appear in Christchurch as announced, and in order that the public should not bo disappointed, Mr. John Hall has secured the services of Miss Aitkin, who purposes giving a series of " Readings from the Poets." Her first appearance will be at the Music Hall on Monday evening next. From the highly flattering reports we have heard of
this lady's entertainment at Dunedin, the public may anticipate considerable gratification.
A Numerously Attended Meeting of electors was held at Bruce's Hotel, Akaroa, on Saturday evening the sth ult. Mr. L. Walker and Captain Greaves attended : each gentleman addressing the electors. No questions were asked of either candidate. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman (W. Weston Esq.) but the candidates were forgotten: they received no vote of thanks, nor was any expression of opinion made in favor of either the one or the other. The meeting, although numerous, was without any excitement; but we suppose as the day of nomination draws near this apathy will wear away.
