LYTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The Council met as usual on Friday evening, May 22, at the Police Office; the following members answered to their names:—The Chairman, Messrs. Willcox, Grubb, Preece, Mills, and Fyfe. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk read letters from Sir. Thomas Leslie and the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade. The Council directed the Surveyor to report on the culvert desired by Mr. Leslie, on Norwich Quay; and the Clerk was requested to invite the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade to a conference at their next sitting. A tender, sent in by Messrs. Chalmers and Wilson, was accepted by the Council, for the formation of the gutter on the north side of London street; the price tendered was 8s 9d per yard. The report of the Inspector of Nuisances having been read by the Chairman, the Clerk was directed to give notice to Mr. Seager, the chief officer of the Lyttelton Gaol, to remove a heap of rubbish now and for some time deposited on the highway; and also to warn him against trespassing in future. The Clerk was also directed to write to several people in the neighborhood of Salt's Gully respecting nuisances complained of in the report of the Inspector; especially with reference to imperfect drainage. On consideration of the Surveyor's report it was determined to advertise for tenders to supply 500 yards of metal for repairing Oxford street as far as Exeter street. It was also decided to employ an additional number of hands to effect the necessary repairs required in the town. After ordering tile various accounts to be paid, the Council adjourned.
