T. W. MAUDE, Provincial Secretary IMMIGRATION REGULATIONS. All persons'desirous of obtaining assisted pas-' sages to tbe Province of Canterbury/ in vessels ; under contract with 1 the Provincial Government,! ; may receive assistance as follows 1. The Government will afford assistance equal . in amount to the sum paid IN casSl by the passenger. Ifthere shallbe any the Government will advance the, sum, taking from the passengerpromissory notes ft>rthe : arhoiint advanced, payable: to'the Treasurer of the'Prbvince. Such notes willbe made payable on demand, but unless the passenfer dispute the debt, or shall attempt to_ leave the. The rate of passage money, inclusive of incidental expenses, to the colony is fixed until further notice, at £17, and all bills will be prepared in accordance with that rate. 7. Applications for assisted passages will be received at the Secretary's Office, in Christchurch, and at the Resident Magistrate's Office, in Lyttelton. ; 1631 NOTICE. = IMMIGRATION TO TIMARU DIRECT. THE Provincial Government have forwarded instructions to the Emigration Agent in London, to arrange for a ship to land' emigrants at Timaru. The vessel will probably leave England in all September, and may be expected at Timaru in all December. | This offers a good opportunity for settlers in the | Timaru district to send to England for their relaI * tives or friends, and applications had better be made at once to the Police Office, Timaru, by those •who wish to avail themselves of the Government assistance. The public are however reminded that those whom they may send for will be subject to the approval of the Agent m England, and that he has full power to refuse passages in the case of persons , who are sickly or unfit to become useful colonists. ! THE public are informed that for the future the address of the Emigration Agent in England is JOHN MARSHMAN, 16, Charing Cross, 160 London. REGULATIONS AND'CONDITIONS TTNDER which Telegraphic Messages may be U transmitted injCanterbury :r— 1. ChaeGtES.—Every message not exceeding 25 words,, including addresses, 2s. 6d.; 25 and not exceeding 50 words, 55.; exceeding 50 and not exceeding 75 words, 7s. 6d. ; and so on, being a charge of 2s. 6d. for every 25 words or fractional parts thereof, including addresses. Every, message must be pre-paid, except /wh6re special exceptions made by the .Superintendent, or in the case of replies to interrogatory messages, s on which the sender may have written the words " reply paid for." In this case, the sender will have to deposit for the reply. Messages may be repeated back on payment of half-price. 2. Transmission of Messages.-—Messages | will be transmitted in the order of their reception, ; - except for special despatches on the service of the Provincial or General Governments, the arrest of criminals, and in cases of pressing emergency. 3. Form of Application.—Messages must be written in ink, and in words at length, signed by the sender. Printed forms will be supplied at the offices upon which messages must be written. 4. Deliveby of Messages.—All messages will be held strictly and will be delivered free of chaige, ,within the towns of Christchurch or Lytlelton. Beyond the boundary of either of the towns an additional charge must be; paid which will be demanded by the clerk in the office previous to the sending of a message. 5 Messages in Cipher.—Messages may be transmitted in cypher at the option of the sender, but, three cyphers, or fractions of three cyphers will be charged as one word. . . 6 ' Replies,—When replies are required immediately the messenger will be required to wait "five minutes" after the delivery, provided the message contain the words " reply immediately. : Responsibility;— Every reasonable exertion will' be used and precaution adopted to secure promptitude; accuracy, and despatch in conducting theSness of the telegraph, but no responsibility wiU be Incurred for errors, omissions, or delays m | Se transmission or non-transmission | non-delivery of any message -from whatever cause i the same may arise.
