CHURCH OF ENGLALD SYNOD.
The second General Synod of the Church of England in this colony met at Nelson on the morning of the 12th instant, in the fine hall which has been built for the sittings of the Provincial Council.
The Bishop of New Zealand, being Metropolitan Bishop, filled the seat of President. There were present also the Bishop of Christchurch, the Bishop of Wellington, the Bishop of Nelson, the Bishop of Waiapu, and the Bishop (Patterson) of the Melanesian Islands.
• The clerical representatives in attendance included the Yen. Archdeacons Maunsell of Waikato, Govett of Taranaki, and Hadfield of Otaki, and a full representation of Auckland, Wellington, and Nelson. But one lay representative attended from any distance—Mr. R. Stokes of Wellington, but seven gentlemen of Nelson appeared as duly elected members not only for that diocese but for some districts in other dioceses. On the roll of representatives from the diocese of Christchureh being called over by the Bishop, not one—either clerical or lay— was in attendance; nor was there any representative from the diocese, of Waiapu.
The Bishop of Now Zealand, as president, opened the proceedings of the Synod by an address of great power although full of detailed information. .No report of this address has reached us, -but without doubt it Avill be printed in an authorised form for the information of churchmen.
Owing to the want of a quorum of lay members, the Synod did not proceed formally to business; but at the time of the departure of the mail, the members present were -working- in committees for the preparation of business.
