PUBLIC NOTICE. CONVEYANCE OF MAILS. npENDERS will be received at the Post -l~ Office, Lyttelton, until noon, on WEDNESDAY, tho 19th day-of February, 1862, for the conveyance of tlie undermentioned mails for the fifteen months from the Ist day of April, 1862, to the 30th day of Juno, 1863 : — LYTTELTON AND CHRISTCHURCH MAIL. For the conveyance of mails between Lyttelton and Christchurch twice a day. The mails to start from Lyttelton every day (excepting Sundays) at 8.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m.; the mails to leave Christchurch at the same hours. The mails not to be longer under any circumstances than two hours on the journey between the two towns. The newspapers by the English mails being of considerable bulk, can, as heretofore, be conveyed' by the way of Sumner; bit the contractors must undertake to deliver them at the Post office, Christchurch, within three hours and a half from the. time of their receipt of them from the Postmaster at Lyttelton. The contractors to undertake to convey mails arriving at Lyttelton by the lloyal Mail steamers to Christchurch at any hour between the hours of 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., Sundays included. Note. —Post offices will be established on the Ferry road, near Millton's- Wharf, and at the Heathcote Valley. The contractors will not therefore have to deliver any loose letters, and the postmen in the towns of Lyttelton and Chrishtchurch for the delivery of the town letters will be in the employment of the Post office; it is therefore to be distinctly understood that tenders for this service must be solely for the conveyance of the mails. CHRISTCHURCH AND KAIAPOI. For the conveyance of a daily mail between Christchurch and Kaiapoi (Sundays excepted) for 15 months from the Ist April, 1862. The mails to leave Christchurch at noon, And to leave Kaiapoi for Christchurch at the same hour. KAIAPOI AND RANGIORA. For the conveyance of mails three times a week between Kaiapoi and Rangiora, for 15 months from Ist April, 1862. The mails leave Rangiora on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so as to reach Kaiapoi in time to be forwarded with the mails for Christchurch, returning from Kaiapoi on the afternoons of the same days after the arrival there of the mails from Christchurch. The contractor to call coming and going at Booth's Store, Woodend. RANGIORA AND OXFORD. For the conveyance of mails once a week between Rangiora and Oxford, for 15 months from Ist April, 1862. The mails to leave Rangiora at 10 a.m. every Friday, and to arrive at Oxford not later than 4 p.m. Starting from Oxford at 10 a.m. every Saturday with the return mail to Rangiora, arriving there not later than 4p.m. KAIAPOI AND SALTWATER CREEK. For the conveyance of mails twice a week between Kaiapoi and Saltwater Creek, for 15 months from Ist April, 1862. The mails to leave Kaiapoi every Thursday' and Saturday at 9 a.m., leaving Saltwater Creek to return to Kaiapoi at 3 p.m. on the same day. KAIAPOI AND THE RIVER HURUNUI OR THE RIVER WAIAU. For the conveyance of mails twice a month between Kaiapoi and the River Hurunui, stating also the amount for which the mail would be carried on, in the event of the Hon. the Postmaster General determining to forward it as far as Highfield. CHRISTCHURGH,, TIMARU, AND WAITANGI MAIL. For the conveyance of a mail weekly between Christchurch and Timaru, extending the service on every alternate week to the River Waitangi, from the Ist April, 1862, to the 30th June, 1863. Except owing to unavoidable accident the mail not to be longer than two days in summer and three days in winter, on the route to Timaru, and not longer than three daj^s from Timaru to the River Waitangi and back to Timaru. The contractor always to remain at least four .hours at Timaru, and the same time at the River Waitangi. LYTTELTON AND AKAROA MAIL. For the conveyance of a mail twice a week for 15 months from Ist April, 1862, between Akaroa and Lyttelton. The mails to start from Lyttelton every Wednesday and Saturday, so as to reach Pigeon Bay not later than 1 p.m., and return from* Pigeon Bay to Lyttelton on the same day, after having remained there at least one hour. OKAIN'S BAY AND PIGEON BAY. For the conveyance of a Weekly Mail between Pigeon B.iy and Okain's Bay for 15 months, from Ist April, 1862. The contractor to start from Okain's Bay so a 9 to arrive at Pigeon Bay at 1 p.m., to remain there at least one hour and to return to Okain's Bay the same day with the Mail from Lyttelton. . GENERAL CONDITIONS, Contractors will not be allowed to take up at any place within one mile of a Post-office, any letters or newspapers, but letters and newspapers may be carried by the contractors between places along the road which are more than a mile distant from the Post office. Such letters to have the, proper amount of postage in stamps affixed to them, which stamps the contractor is bound to destroy. ■ Contractors must undertake to receive aiid deliver letter bags at such houses or places along the road as may be desired by the Postmaster. . Contractors will be bound to proceed with mails without any undue delay or stoppage on the road after the hour of departing from the Post-office. Mail cart drivers and letter carriers to be subject to instant dismissal if found drunk while on duty. The Postmaster to have the option at any time of delaying the carrier for half-an-honr after the usual hour for the departure of the mail. ! Contractors will have to find sureties for the performance of their respective contracts. : Penalties for breach of contract will be enforced as well by deductions from the amounts due to contractors as also by putting their bonds in suit.
