Mr. Jff. E. Alport reports a large business at auction during the past ten days. On Thursday, the 4th inst, at the market place sale rooms, sale of papier maehe ceiling ornaments and beading, room papers; leather; millinery, cloth and tweed in the piece, &c;,—a well-attended sale, and competition brisk. On Friday, the sth, at the Golden Fleece Hotel, sale of Mr. Ballard's trade fixtures, utensils, furniture, bedding, &c.,—a large attendance, and prices fair. Saturday last, at Christchurch market, Nelson apples, in prime, order, fetched 9| to lOd per lb; flour, 16s to 17s per 100 lbs; potatoes, 2s 6d per cwt; carrots; 2s ditto, cheese, 8d to 9d per perlb; 9 pigs fetched from 10s to 32s each; fowls, 4s 6d to 5s per pair. On Monday last, at Mr. Fantham's farm, Lincoln road, 5 horses fetched £22 7s; sow and 10 pigs, £5; 4 store pigs, £8 Bs.; several stacks Oats, beans, peas, and hay were sold, also drays, ploughs, harness, ice.,— the sale throughout was well attended, and competition good. On Tuesday, closing sale of Stringer and Co.'s damaged drapery,—as usual, a good company, and brisk biddings. On Wednesday, at the Market place sale rooms, 400 volumes of new and popular books were sold at very fair prices.
