Local Intelligence.
The elections for the province for the General Assembly, whose dates are announced, are as follow: —For. Kaiapoi, nomination on Thursday (to-morrow); polling, if any, on Saturday the ninth, at the Court House. There will be an election for the Provincial Council, at the same time. Mr. Cookson is the only candidate for the General Assembly and Mr. J.Thrch for the, Council. .For Heathcote District there will also be an election of a member for the General Assembly and one for the Provincial Council at the same time. The nomination for both will take place at Christchurch Quay, on Monday next, February 11, and the polling, if any, for the Assembly on, the following day, and for the Council on the day after. Mr. G. W. Hall is in the field for the General Assembly, and Mr. J. Ollivier for the Provincial Council. For Akaroa, the nomination is appointed to take place at Akaroa oh' Saturday the 9th instant, and the polling on the following Wednesday the 13th instant. Mr. W. S. Moorhouse is opposed by .Mr. A. E. White, as a candidate for the vacant seat. The.writs have not yet coriie down for either the Timaru or the Cheviot districts. The latter, it is supposed, have been delayed by the stoppage of the overland mail at the Clarence :river.- Mr. Francis Jollie for Timaru, apdMr.C. Hunter Browa.for .Cheviot, are 'the^ only" carididates <yet in the field for these districts.
■ We learn from Auckland that almost all the 'elections in that province were about to be contested, and that the result remained veiy doubtful. We shall probably receive decisive .intelligence on the return of the Airedale. ;There is.noiurther.electionriews from Nelson, Hawkes Bay or Wanganui, than has been already published. By Marlborough papers we learn that Dr. Monro was about to stand for Picton, and that Mr. Weld, who reserved himself for Wairau, had been anticipated in his candidature by Mr. W. H. Eyes, who was likely to run him very hard. The dates of the elections are not announced.
