NOTICE. PROVINCE OP CANTEEBUEY TO "WIT. AKAROA DISTRICT. "¥¥7"HEREAS a Writ under the hand of YY Thomas Gore Browne, Esq., Companion of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over the Islands of New Zealand, &c, &c, bearing date the Fourteenth day of July, in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-Seven,hath been directed to me, John Watson, as Returning Officer of the Akaroa District, requiring and commanding me to cause to be elected by the voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in manner {and form by law prescribed, three legally qualified persons to serve as Members of the Provincial Council for the said Akaroa District : Now, therefore, I, the said John Watson, Returning Officer for the said Akaroa District, do hereby, in pursuance of the said recited Writ, give notice that a Public Meeting of the electors of the said Akaroa District will be holden at the Court House, Akaroa, on Monday, the 2nd day of November next, at noon, for the purpose of nominating three persons to serve as Members of the Provincial Council for the said Akaroa District; and in the event of a poll being demanded for the Candidates or any of them, such polling shall take place on Thursday, the sth day of November next, at the Court House, at Akaroa; at the School House, Pigeon Bay; and at Mr. Tuson's House, Okain's Bay. The voting to commence at any time after 9 o'clock, a.m. of the said sth i day of November, and to close at 4 o'clock, p.m. of the same day. JOHN WATSON, Returning Officer. PROCLAMATION. \\T HEREAS by an Act of the General V y Assembly of New Zealand, intituled " The Superintendent's Deputy Act, 1856" it is enacted that— " It shall be lawful for the Superintendent of any Province, by Proclamation, to be published in the Government Gazette of such Province, to appoint such person as he may think fit, being a registered elector of such Province, to be his Deputy and as such to perform and exercise all the acts and powers (except such powers as are therein excepted) which may be exercised and performed by such Superintendent, or such of them only as shall be specified in such Proclamation ; and that the acts of such ; Deputy Superintendent, so far as authorized by | such Proclamation, shall be as effectual in all respects as if performed by the Superintendent himself, provided always that such Deputy Superintendent shall act only during the absence of the Superintendent from the Province, or, in case of vacancy by his death resignation or otherwise during such absence, until his successor shall have been elected." NOW, THEREFORE, I, JAMES EDWARD FITZ GERALD, the Superintendent of the Province of Canterbury, in pursuance of the powers vested in me by the said recited Act, do by this Proclamation appoint CHARLES BOWEN, ESQUIRE, being a Registered Elector of the said Province to be my Deputy, and as such to have all powers and authorities, and perform all acts and deeds which may be lawfully had or performed by a Deputy Superintendent, under or by virtue of the said recited Act, for the period of one hundred and fifty days from the date hereof, or until my successor shall have been sooner elected. Given under my hand, and sealed with the Public Seal of the said Province, at Christehurch, this twenty-eighth day of September, one thousand eight hundred and fifty-seven. HAYING represented the Christehurch District in the Provincial Council from the first election of that body, I now offer myself as a candidate to represent you in the next Council, as I feel that I am more peculiarly connected ,with the electors of the Avon District than with any other portion of my former constituency. In requesting your support upon the present occasion, I can only say that, should you do me the honor to elect me, I shall, as I have hitherto done, endeavour to promote the interests of this district as well as of the Province at large. My public conduct will be influenced now as formeiiy by a conviction that the duties of a. Member of the Provincial Council consist in promoting practical improvements rather than in discussing political theories. I may refer to the discharge of my duties as Speaker of the late Council as a_ guarantee for due attention to the business which may be entrusted to me as your representative.
