Another serious lesson has jasfc Uwjl, read out to the Railway Companies. Dr Phillips, who on the Bih of last Decem* ber sustained such injuries by an accident on the London and, Souths Western Rail* way as to be described by his counsel as a living wreck, has been awarded £16,000 a 9 compensation, the largest sura ever recovered in such a case, so far as I know, Dr Phillips brought an action against the company last April, bat* the jury only gave him £7000, about asiuuch as he was making yearly: The case, however* hay« ing been tried again on an appeal in the Common Pleas division, Dr Phillips re» ceived the larger and ia every way more adequate award. The railway companies will find it the cheapest thing in the end to take ear© of the Ihea of their pas* seagcis.
