HEAVY GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS.

SERIOUS CONFLICT DEVELOPING

IN NORTH-WEST FRANCE. ,

ITALIAN DEFENCE EXPENDITURE

The Times' military correspondent writes: "Information from sources suggests that during the last ten days the German armies in France have been heavily reinforced, and are determined to make heroic efforts again to strike at the enmies' ground east and west simultaneously. Youth and family men are together in the line. If the. conduct of tlie Germans had not been so abominable, one could afford to admire the energy with which they are conducting the war. There is evidence that one and a-half million Germans are engaged in the west, and now that . Antwerp ,has fallen the greater part of these will be available for offensive operations. The Allies still retain a marked numerical preponderance, and there is no reason to suppose that the serious conflict now developing in North-west France will not turn to our advantage."

A French officer states that' the Kaiser- owned a hotel in the heart of Paris, where he stored motor-cars, petrol, and a ton of ammunition. The Kaiser had hoped to watch from the balcony Ms troops passing down the Champs Elysees.

The locality of the later engagements, however, proves that the Germans have been driven westward.
