LONGWORTH IS "BOSS."

Nicholas Longworth is boss -in his family (says a special despatch from Chicago to the San Francisco Chronicle, on June 16). He demonstrated it today at the Republican Convention. Mr and -Mrs Longworth (Alice Roosevelt) were seated in the front row on the platform. She was handsomely dressed in a grey-gren , gown, with long, white gloves, and 1 a Merry Widow hat. She was laughing and chatting with Mrs Medill M'Connick, and Nicholas beamed alongside her. An assistant ser-geant-at-arms, who did not know who she was, asked her to remove her hat. Mrs Longworth stared at him, until he wilted, and shrivelled, and went away. A few minutes later another assistant sergeant-alarms, also iguorinjj her identity, made the sftnie request. Her Merry Widow was colossal, and .obscured the view of a large number on the platform. Mrs Longworfch refused in a decisive tone. At this point Nicholas leaded forward, and said: — "You had better take off your hat, my dear."

"I won't," said Mrs Longworth, with a snap:

74 ' Come," said Nicholas, in a less complacent tone; "take off your hat." "I won't, and you shan't make me," retorted Mrs Longworth hotly. "Yes, you will," said Nicholas, raising his voice. "Don't make a scene, Alice; take off your hat."

Mrs Longtfqrth said nothing, but ooked mutinous.

"Alice," said Nicholas; "I want you to take off yom; hat." _ Reluctantly and^ silently she obeyed. For the rest of the lesson her smile was mechanical, and she did not seem happy. Nicholas, however, continaed to heam.
