TO-DAY'S MEETING.
The meeting to be held to-day at two o'clock, to discuss tbe advisableness of forming a separate county, is likely to be a thoroughly representative one. On Thursday night, after the termination of the Town H all meeting at Normanby, the chairman, Mr. F. H. Brett, brought the subject under the notice of those present. A conversational discussion followed, during which leave of absence from the parade on the following day was solicited from the chairman (who is also captain of the local volunteer corps) by a large number. The chairman, although anxious to help the movement in every way, could not see his way to allow the parade to fall through, and it was eventually decided that Mr. Finlayson should attend the meeting in the capacity of a representative. During the discussion, Mr. Quin instanced the case of a Road Board in Southland which voluntarily decided upon merging into the County Council. The Hutt County Council, at its last meeting, passed a resolution abolishing the Highway and Local Boards. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that the people here should seek to simplify Local Government matters. They feel that taxation is getting unbearable, and that either the Road Boards or the County Councils will have to give way. We expect to see a large muster of the settlers. If there are any opponents of the movement, it will be as well to hear their views, and we trust that they will have the courage of their opinions, and express them at tbe meeting. Discussion, if carried on in a fair and impartial spirit, invariably results in enlightening both the advocates and opponents of any public movement.
