BALLOONING IN HIGH LATITUDES
At a sitting of the Academv of Sciences at Stockholm on February 14th, M. Andre, the celebrated Swedish aeronaut, explained in detail a proposal made by him for undertaking a voyage to the .North Pole in a balloon. In the course of bis lecture he expressed the belief that, ia view of the favourable conditions which the Polar regions afforded for aerial voyaging, and the great progress lately made in aeronautics, a balloon could make the voyage from Spitzbergen over the North Pole in about thirty days. The cost of the enterprise would lie about a hundred and thirty thousand kroner (about seven thousand two hundred and twenty pounds).
