There are many tribes who trace their descent from Toi through Eauru but very few genealogies through Te Kura-whakaata, A\ta-niii-a-rangi or Euarangi-i-mua are obtainable. This is tie descent of Te Kura-i----monoa, wife of Toi;:— Kongo-ma-tane, Te Ao-nui, Te Whetu-nui, Te Wheturoa, Te Hika-nui, Kura ariki and Te Kura-i-monoa the wife of Toi-te-hua-tahi'. From Awatope sprang Tamatearehe and Ira-waro.

CHAPTER 111. The AhobiciJi'alj Tit ides of the Bay of Plenty District akp Voyage of tjie Ahatawhas to Hawaiki. Tbo lands whence the Maori came were known as Hawaiki (Kotehuhua o nga kni, koia Hawaiki.) The tribes of Toi dwelt in Aotearoa. The name of the u hole world was Mataora. And tin' i i ceendants of hangi separated and commenced their allotted ■tasks in ihe world, in the presence of Tu, and Tane, and Tangaroa, and Tawhiri-matea, and Kongo, and of Tangotango. And Tane quarelled with Tangnroa, (the Polynesian Neptune,) and the weapon of Tane, (god of forests and birds,) wasanet —and the myriads of Tangaroa were destroyed. The weapon of Tangaroa against Tane was a snare—and the myriads of Tane were destroyed. And Tu strove against Tawhiri-matea— and this is the saying:—

"Te Ikfi-ft-Tu Te Ika-a-Rorigo," for those who fall on the field of battle. And-the nations of the whole world became scattered and no sound was heard save the wailing of the Children of Tane.

Such was the origin of all evil in this world'—the 6trife that those beings began—and the evil descended to the men of Hawaiki, and to the time of ITe'nuku, and of Hou, and of Ta-ma-te-kapua, and of Manam. And in the time of the great battles which men call Ihu-inotomotokia, Tarai-whenua-kura, Te Tahuna a-Tara and Maikuku-tea, those evils descended upon Aotearoa, • Thus evil came to this land for the first time, for the people of Aotearoa, the tribes of Toi, were not an evil people. They dwelt in peace on the earth and lived well towards each other.

Here are the tribes of the "tangata whenua" or .aboriginal people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) together with the names of the ancestors from whom they sprang;—Ngati-tu-Tuoi sprang from Tara-roa ; Tini-o-te-Makahua sprang from Ngaj-mii; Tini«o-te-Ma-rangaranga .sprang. from Ngm-roa; Earauheturukiruki sprang from Ngai-wbare-kiki; Bflraube-maamae sprang from Ngai-whare-kaka; Tawa-rarau-ririki sprang from Ngai-roki; Tururu.mauku sprang from Ngai-roku; Tini-o-te-kokomuka*sprapgfromNgai roka; Tirii-o»te-Kawerau sprang from Ngai-peha; Baupo-ngaueue sprang fromNgai-taketake; Titii-o-Toisprang from Ngai-tC'huru nianu ; Tirn Maaka, Hapu-oneone, Heketangu-rangi, Ngarara-whakawa, Kabui-ki-uta, Ka-hui-ki-tai, Kahui'ki»waho, Kabui'ki-> tua, Patu-paiarehe.
