LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
The Local Government measure, which is being so eagerly awaited on all hands, will deal with loan polls and will modify the present law as to absentee ratepayers being reckoned as having voted against the loan proposals. The Premier thinks absentees have too much influence in thwarting the other ratepayers, but still he is opposed to allowing people who have no property to cast burdens upon those who have. An endeavour will, also be made in this Bill to minimise the difficulties in connection with destitute persons living in one district and receiving reliof from another. Another Bill will be introduced dealing with the question o£ charitable aid. These two measures, together with the ever recurring liquor ques-, tion, will perhaps occupy tho most important place in the deliberations of the present session As to the Local Government Bill so important and far-reaching are the interestsinvolved, and so divergent are the ideas of Members (without reference to party) upon the subject, that it is felt in many quarters the measure cannot be put through all its stages this session. It is contended that it will be found necessary to refer it to the local bodies for consideration and suggestions during the recess, and that the matter cannot be finally settled till next session.
