THE HOT LAKES CHRONICLE AND Tourists' Journal. WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 1895.

Mr T. McKenzie, member for Clutha, is desirous that the Government should setup a Royal Commission to ascertain (1) Whetheradequateattention isgiven to the examination, analysis and classification of tho various waters and muds of the thermal springs district and (2) whether any change in tho prosent management of the Rotorua Sanatorium i 3 desirable. This is no doubt the outcome of Mr McKenzie's visits to this district, and wo must suppose that ho is actuated by the purest motives. So far as tho analyses of the mineral waters here is concerned, however, that section of tho pu' lie which cares to interest itself in such matters is furnished with ample particulars iu tho Official Year Book which is period* ically published, and contains the results of the most recent tests. In the latest edition of this book will be found not only analyses of the various springs but an exhaustive treatise by I)r Ginders on tho thermal resources of the district generally, and a comparison of the Rotorua baths with those of Europe. In addition to thib wo find a paper by Sir James Hector on the mineral springs and mud baths, with a tabulated statement r&garding their chemical character. Mr C. Malfroy, engineer-in-charge, has also published the result of his observations on tiie " Geyser Action at Rotorua, which is of consummate interest to those who make a study of those phenomena. These particulars are merely, stated in justice to tho gentlemen who ariidentified with tho Sanatorium here, and who have labored to place its resources before the public. Iu regard to the second clause of Mr McKenzie's motion, he may be iu possession of in 'formation which leads him to suppose that such a course is justifiable That remains to be seen. It may bo stated, however, that it seems to bo tho fashion now-a-days .to set up Royal Commissions to inquire into tho working of institutions of every description. Wo do not suppose that the officials here dread any such inquiry, and wo only hope that the gentlemen who have the good fin tune to be included in tho Commission, if it is 3et up, may have mat« ters so arranged for them that they may combine with theirduties a length, enod course of our wondrous healthrestoring baths.
