THE GALATEA ROADS. Contracts have now boon let on tlio Galatca-Waikaremoana road extending over a distance of about 10 miles between Wliirinaki and To Whaiti. About 100 men avo engaged on this road including natives. Eight gangs comprising about oO men are engaged on the Galatea-Rua-toki road which is laid off across the ranges. iTo natives are as yet employed on this work though contracts will bo eventually sot out for them. At present there is only sufficient work for the parties of unemployed sent up. Fairly good weather bus boon experienced so far, only a few wot days intervening in which the men were knocked off. Great circuity is experienced in getting out . .res but matters in this respect will assume a more favorable aspect so soon as t'nc projected depot store is built at Galatea. The blocks and timber, &c, necessary for the work have gone out, and a storekeeper appointed by the Government went out on Tuesday. Last week a meeting was held at Te "Whaiti when tho engineer, Mr 11. M. "Wi T ..on, explained to the natives tho intention of the Government in relation to tho road from Galatea, through Ruatahuna, to Waikaromoana, a distance of about (>() miles, Luatahuna being about half way. A little finessing ensued but it was ultimately decided by the natives that no opposition would be offered. Tho natives have accepted contracts on this side of To "Whaiti but in pursuance of their policy of non-intervention they will not co-operate in the works thence, onwards.
