A BAD BARGAIN.
A young merchant risked his own life to save a vot'ig woman from drowning. "Noble-mindec! youth," said the girl's f ath er,"'' wo owe you a debt of gratitude. A hundred thousand marks or the hand of my daughter! Choose!" Our hero thought that if ho took the girl ho would get the money into the bargain, and replied: "I choose your daughter." "You have done well," said the father; "I covhl not have given you the hundred thousaod marks, as I am only a poor cobbler; but you shall have my daughter. Jo ;, i hands, my dear children."
