LIME AND AGRICULTURE.
There is an agitation on foot at the present time, originating in Southland having for its object the carriage of lime on Government railways free of charge. It is not our pvrpose at the present time to discuss tho question of whether tho request should ho granted or not; but s ; mply to add testimony to the vast benefit some lnnd receives from the application of lime. In tho Tokomairiro district, where the land now has only to be tickled with a plough to get it to sudlo with a harvest, as much as 0G bushels to the acre of wheat has been reaped this season. This is solely the result of liming and draining. Twelve or fifteen years ago the same land would not have yielded :25 bushels to tho acre.
