PROVINCIAL TAXATION.

But a few months has passed since we had occasion to note the fact that the sister province of Auckland had been forced to have recourse to certain measures of local taxation, in order to obtain the means whereby to carry on the government of the province; and, further, that the ; unwise course had been there, adopted of taxing, imports, or adding a local tariff to the already crushing one of' the /General Government. Now, the, Bame necessity begins to be felt by our own Provincial Go-vernment,-I-anda day or two will see measures for raising funds' brought forward for' th? consideration of the Council. v The . necessity, has ; become ‘apparent, and. the only.’ question, remaining is that of method, ■ ; Solong r as the; taxes to/be imposedfiresuch as will bn the varioua dasses of our

community . in proportion ,to their meanis, and indirect taxation is avoided, we shall not have one word to say against the action taken by the Government. Let the public know what they, have to, pay in the shape of Provincial taxes, when they , pay it, and how it is paid; and we believe it will be paid without grudging, for In such case we have the best possible guarantee against extravagance, and for economy in the carrying on the government; but we must -have no local excise, no. further slices cut from .our loaves, no dips into our tea chests and sugar bags. The day for indirect taxation is passing away, and Government will show a wise discretion in avoiding it. We shall take note of the measures proposed as they come before the Council.
