CANTERBURY.

Trk Lyttelton Times, of the 13th April, reports as follows:

Business during- the past week has heon very quiet, and the demand for merchandise very limited. Dealers continue to purchase very sparingly, and only to supply the wants of immediate consumption. The purchases for the winter season do not appear to have commenced as yet, although the usual demand generally commences’ at' this time. The arrival of the Canute on the 7th inst., w«th a very hen vy cargo for this port, has added considerably to our alre-idy overstocked markets, and has not tended to improve the feeling in our commercial circles. We are glad to see by late advices that some difficulty is experienced in fitting up the vessels laid on for this port, as it indicates a cessation of shipments, and may eventually give time for our overcharged stocks to relieve themselves. There are but few articles requiring notice this week. Bulk East; India pale ale is still <carce, and wanted. Bottled stout of ffrst-class brands is gettingscarce Cntidßes are dull. Some little inquiry has-been made fo - cheese and- English hams, principally for the West Coast. Sugars are quiet, but stocks are moderate, and the rates firm. Teas, good medium congous, are more inquired for.

We have heard of no'more failures during the week, and hope we have seen the end of t-henr for some time to come.

There is no change in discounts or exchanges. Tho money market is fairly easy.
