Mr Breach, who was Minister several years at the old church (sinre burned down) has suddenly asserted mnw claim to the new building for alleged arrears' of salary. He took possession of the church on Thursday, taking off the look and putting on anew one, and placing a padlock oil the gate. When tho church committee became, aware of this action they procured the assistance of two policemen and a locksmith and burst,open tho door. Whileso engaged Mr Breach came on the scene, rushed excitedly at the constables, and endeavored to force an entrance into tho church. A scuffle ensued between, the .

Wellington, Friday. A charge of sheep-stealing preferred against 'Richard Smith, a well-known settler at Pahautanui, was heard to-day and was adjourned until Monday. The subscribers to the New Zealand penny dinner fund have sent to England £25 for the poorest school children in London. The exact amount of Customs revenue collected during tho past month is not yet known, as returns from Kaipara and Taurauga have not been received. The amount known to hare been collected is £143,880 0s lOd. the principal contributions being as follows :— Dnnediu, £35,390 10s lid ; Auckland, £32.264 Ss 4d ; Lyttelton and Chrlstehurch, £27,857 2s Sd; Wellington, £23,31S 3s 9d. The amount collected in April of this ' year was £101,553 17s, so that last month's collections top it by over £1000. The estimate was £104,166 13s 4d.

Nelson, Friday. .At a meeting of the Nelson Chamber of tJommerce to day the tariff proposals were considered, nnd it was resolved : — "That this Chamber recognises the gravity of the position in which tho Treasurer finds himself, and commends his action in proposing to provide tor the deficit by increased taxation instead of carrying the deficit to the permanent debt." "That this Chamber considers the proposed duty of 1 per cent primage highly objectionable, and, suggests an additional duty on sugar or some other merchandise instead.' 1 " That this Chamber approves a uniform scalo of contents as defined in the tariff for the collection of the duty on case spirits, bnt thinks the duty should still oe paid on tho actnal strength both on bulk and case spirits." "That this Chamber strongly protests against merchants being called on to give bonds for possible duties to be levied, seeing that such duties if levied will be practically irrecoverable, on intervening business done." "That this Chaniber approves the duty imposed on imported creen fruits, pulp, and preserved fruits." At a meeting of the Nelson Fire Brigade held to-night it was resolved to stronplv protest against tho imposition in the tariff of a duty on fire brigade hose or any other appliances necessary for the extinction of fire. It was also resolved that the other fire brigades throughout the colony be asked to co-operate in opposing this duty. AVilliam Evans Dempsle, a pnblican and expressman, was to-day sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment for being illegally on the premises of Messrs Neale anil Haddow. The evidence showed that some horse feed had been moved.

Christchurch, Friday. At the K.M. Court to-day, Jonathan Roberts was remanded till Tuesday. He appears in capital condition, and said he yotild plead guilty, as he wanted to have It over as soon as possible. The Henleys, changed with shooting at Mr.P. Tho committee had made inquiry of their own motion, and were satisfied that the complaints were justified. The case was adjourned for fonr weeks, but it was intimated that a license would not be granted to Mrs Diamond, the present holder. Those convicted of Sunday trading were severally warned, and the action ef the police was approved. Fears are entertained for the safety of the schooner Janet Kamsay, which left this port on February 28th for Macqnarrie Island. She is owned by the Dunedin Iron and Woodware Company, and was charted by the Sealing Company. She had_ been on tho same trip before, and having secured sea-elephant oil, £c. t she brought it on to Port Chalmers, leaving 14 men on the island till she relumed. When she left Stewart Island on the last trip she had only three men on board, two men haviucr left her there.
