THE WEATHER
Mr. Bates reports: Atmospheric pressure increased during Thursday nigiu, but is still below normal in the nortii. Strong south-easterly winds ha* c ruled in the north wards of Cook Strait, and easterly breezes elsewhere. Cold changeable weather Iras continued in the North with rain along the East Coast, but fair to cloudy conditions have prevailed generally in the South Island.
Present indications are for moderate to strong south-easterly and easterJy winds, backing to northcriies*. and then increasing. Expect warmci weather shortly with, skies clouding over, and rain .f.uTlowiug generally. The barometer will fall everywhere soon.

There was a phenomenal raiustonu oh Wednesday night and to-day. :iccompanied by a boisterous southerly gale. Most of the business premises iv the niaiu street report damage by rain entering their shops, and a rough estimate places the damage at £lOUO.
The Arahura arrived from Napier this morning, but could not be worked on account of- the heavy sea, and liaving: to stand off all day was ordered to proceed, overcarrying mails, pussengeijs and : cargo.
The Monowai from Auckland was expected this afternoon, but is now not expected till the morning, when it "is doubtful if she can be tendered.
Considerable losses among shorn sheep: are feared. :
