GLASCOW EXPERIMENT.

Pasengers on certain of the tram cars iv Glascow had an added zestgiv. en to their 'journey by the presence of women conductors, two of *wliom have been installed by way of experiment, and with a view to filling up the gaps caused by the departure of several hundred of the regular employees on active srviee. A good deal of difficulty lias been experienced by the Tramway Department in maintaining the normal ser vice. Tliis has hitherto been done by many of the employees working seven days a week, and the management have as a result turned their attention to the question of employing women on the ears. An experiment was made when two women who were previously employed ?is clerks in the tramway office in Bath Street, acted in the capacity of conductors on the Dumbreek-University route. The women did a full day's work. They were accompanied by tramway inspectors, but they required little assistance, and carried out their duties in a prompt and efficient manner. Naturally, much interest was evinced in the departure, and many people Avho had no occasion to travel by tram car boarded the cars on which the women were employed in order to obtain the priv_ ilege of having their tickets punched by the new conductors. The uniform worn by the women is of a dark blue colour, whereas that of the men is green. The tunic buttons up to the neck, and, like the cap, it is adorned with yellow stripes. Although the cap is fashioned similarly . to that of the men, it is much wider.
