Nelson, February 24th.
At a meeting of citizens to night it was resolved that this meeting desires to record its high appreciation of the services rendered by the Premier on behalf of the colony to the Empire and cordially supports the proposal to ten der him a testimonial in recognition of his prompt and patriotic action. A large and representative committee was appointed to give effect to the lesolution. Word is received by cable that W. H. Moyes p<ssed first section B. A.; C. R. Fell, G. P. Rogers anl Gerald Fell each passed the fir.t section of ths L. L. B. at the degree examio ation . of the N. Z. University. AU these belong to Nelson College. Invercargill, Februtry 24th. A public meeting convened by resolution of the Borough Council was held to night to discuss the question of joining in the movement to present a testimonial to the Premier. E ghteen were present. Mr Gilfedder, M. H. R. moved that the testimonial take ths form of apuise of sovereigns. Mr Cioaby Smith . moved as an amendment that an address in a casket of colonial Woods be presented to the Premier. The motion was carried, a considerable number refraining from voting. Several refused to act on the committee set up to further the proposal. The mover of an amendment to adjourn the meeting till a later date said that it wus going too far for a dozen men to dictate what ten thousand people should do in tbe matter. Wellington, February 25. The reports on the rnems for providing increased water supply lor tbe city f ui nished by the city engineer and Messrs Mest«yer and Fergusson, was adopted by the City Council to-night. The engineers recommend an extension of the catchment area at Ksrori end putting down, another line of pipe from Wainui with the election of a new dam at the latter place. The estimated cash is L 230,000. The whole question wa. referral to the Finance Committee to advise as to the neces .ary action to put the report into effect. The Governor received a cable from tbe Casualty Department of Capetown that 3665 B Steph-ns (of the Sixth New Zealand Mounted Infantry) died of enteric at Charlestown on the ] 9th inst*, 4582 J H Wright (of the Seventh Ne'v Z aland Mounted Infantry) died of enteric at Heilbron. Advice was received to-night that the troopships Surrey and Cornwall left Albany at daylight this morning for Duibiii. Dunedin, January 24. An appeal is being made on behalf of J. G. S. Grant, the well known old identity who has for many years gained a living by literary work, chiefly pamphlets which he sold himself.
